Clear target zones, deliberate speed control and simple scoring make position play easier to practice systematically.
Practice Position Play Systematically
In pool, the next position is part of the current shot decision. Choose the cue ball target zone before deciding on speed and route.
Setup: Three Target Zones
Mark three similarly sized, accessible zones on the table. Set repeatable starting positions for the cue ball and object ball. Avoid placing a zone directly in a pocket.
Drill A: Ten Shots at Consistent Speed
Choose one zone. Play ten attempts at a consistent speed. Record successful finishes, misses and notable cue ball routes.
Drill B: Ten Shots with Speed Changes
Repeat ten attempts from the same layout. Deliberately change only the speed, keeping the intended target zone and route unchanged. Compare the spread.
Review and Next Session
Count successful finishes per ten attempts. Note whether the cue ball stops short, runs long or finishes to the side. Address the most frequent error in the next session.
Metric: Successful finishes inside the target zone / 20 attempts. Compare multiple equivalent sessions before judging improvement.
